Iron Paint – Textured Wall Coating
Aged, Oxidised Finish for Unique Accents
Product Overview.
Earthcote Iron Paint is a specialised coating formulated to create an authentic weathered, rusted effect. Drawing inspiration from maritime and industrial environments, it replicates the look of storm-worn surfaces and working ship hulls.
Rust is more than a finish, it is history in motion. This brush-on coating delivers a genuine aged aesthetic for both interior and exterior applications.
Key Features of Earthcote Iron Paint.
Suitable for both interior and exterior use.
Contains organic iron filings with a rusting activator.
Ideal for pots, feature walls, balustrades, and ironwork accents.
Naturally corrodes over time for a dynamic, evolving finish.
Not suitable for wet areas (e.g. showers) or high-traffic surfaces.
Iron Aesthetic & Inspiration.
Inspired by industrial decay and maritime heritage, Iron Paint transforms ordinary surfaces into richly textured, oxidised finishes. The natural rusting process ensures every application is unique, creating a distinctive lived-in character.
Iron Paint Technical Details.
Surface Compatibility: Best suited for decorative cement plastered walls, pots and ironwork, however, not recommended for structural steel or areas where rust runoff may stain adjacent surfaces.
Packaging: Earthcote Iron Paint: 1L (plastic bucket).
Earthcote Rusting Agent: 250ml & 1L (plastic bottles).
Colour Transformation: Before oxidation: Dark charcoal to black.
After oxidation: Rich, organic rust tones.
Earthcote Iron Paint Application Guidelines.
Preparation: Ensure all surfaces are properly primed prior to application. Recommended primers:
Midas Masonry Primer (masonry surfaces).
Midas Metal Etch Primer (ferrous and galvanised surfaces).
Application Process:
- Apply Midafelt 225, tinted to dark charcoal or black, as a base coat. Allow to dry.
- Stir Earthcote Iron Paint thoroughly to keep iron particles evenly suspended. Apply the first coat in a crisscross pattern using a brush (±4m²/L). Allow to dry for 4 hours.
- Apply a second coat in the same manner. As it begins to dry, apply Midas Rusting Agent from top to bottom, working it into the surface to activate the rust effect.
Sealing (Optional).
Sealing is generally not recommended, as it may reduce the rusting effect. If sealing is required, use Midas Colour Retaining Primer (1–2 coats). Incorrect sealers may cause the surface to darken or turn black.
Coverage & Drying Times.
Earthcote Iron Paint: ±4m²/L per coat.
Drying time: 4 hours between coats.
Rusting Agent: Apply to semi-dry second coat for activation.
Important Notes:
Rust is a living finish and will continue to evolve over time.
Do not exceed 48 hours between coats to avoid contamination.
Avoid application in extreme temperatures (below 10°C or above 35°C) or high humidity (>85%).
Product is batch tinted—order sufficient quantities to ensure colour consistency.
Maintain a wet edge during application to prevent lap marks.
Cleaning & Maintenance.
Cleaning Tools: Remove excess paint with an absorbent cloth, then rinse with water
Environmental Care: Dispose of paint and containers responsibly. Do not clean tools where runoff may enter stormwater systems
